Independent living communities are built for people who manage on their own. Over time some residents begin to need a little help: getting ready in the morning, a shower twice a week, a reminder at medication time. An on-site care partner is a home care company that keeps a team in the building to provide that help.
How it differs from ordinary home care
Most home care agencies sell visits in blocks of several hours and send a caregiver from across town. A resident who needs twenty minutes in the morning and twenty at night cannot buy care that way. Because an on-site team is already in the building, it can offer short visits throughout the day and price them as a monthly package.
Who is responsible for what
- The care company employs, trains, schedules, insures and supervises the caregivers.
- Residents contract with the care company and pay it directly for the services they choose.
- The community provides housing and its usual services, and leases the care company a small office.
- Residents keep the right to use any provider they like, or none.
What to expect day to day
A site supervisor works in the building and is the single point of contact for the community's staff. Caregivers follow a schedule of visits, and a good provider can show a record of each one. At Balanced Home Care that record is created when the caregiver scans a tag at the resident's door.
The services are non-medical: personal care, bathing, dressing, medication assistance, escorts to meals, safety checks and companionship. Skilled care still comes from the home health and hospice agencies residents choose, and the on-site team works alongside them.
