The first 30 days: how a care provider should start in your building

What a well-run start looks like when an on-site care provider begins work in an independent living community, week by week.

The first month decides whether residents trust a new care provider. A start that is rushed or badly explained unsettles residents and puts pressure on your staff. This is what a careful start looks like.

Before day one

Residents should hear the news from the community, not from the provider. A letter on your letterhead, followed by days when the provider is in the building to meet people, lets residents and families ask questions before anything changes. Where another provider is leaving, its caregivers should be offered jobs so residents keep familiar faces.

Week one

The provider's leadership should be visible. At Balanced Home Care a member of our corporate team is in the building every day for the first week. Problems in week one are small if someone with authority is there to fix them the same day.

Weeks two and three

Schedules settle and residents get to know their caregivers. Leadership should still be on site most days, and your executive director and the site supervisor should be meeting on a set schedule.

Day 30

Ask everyone. We survey every resident and family we serve at 30 days and review the results with the community. If something is not working, this is when you want to know.
